Pull-ups: which grip should you choose to progress?
A wider grip does not automatically build a wider back. Before changing variations, find one that lets you repeat a comfortable movement and track your progress.

The essentials before you start.
- Grip changes the movement without creating one universal winner.
- Keep consistent reference points when comparing sessions.
- Choose a variation that also suits your comfort and goal.
What changes when your hands turn
With an overhand grip, your palms face away from you; with an underhand grip, they face towards you. A neutral grip places the palms facing each other. These positions change the movement mechanics and the sensations around your arms and shoulders.
A study comparing pull-up variations measured differences in muscle activity during the task. It did not track back muscle growth over several months: a higher electrical signal is not enough to rank grips for building muscle.

Underhand gripChoose a grip you can reproduce
For your next sessions, choose a hand spacing and grip that feel comfortable. Keep the same starting and finishing reference points too. This practical choice helps you compare repetitions without turning every session into a new exercise.
If a test requires a particular grip, practise that variation as well. For personal training, you can prioritise consistency over collecting grips. No position guarantees the absence of pain.
Make room for your current ability
If a full pull-up is still difficult, assistance can make the movement more accessible. An assisted machine, a support or a resistance band each changes the help you receive: record the exact setup you used.
Here is a tracking approach to adapt to your equipment and comfort. It is not a protocol validated by the cited study.
- Choose a variation and assistance setup you can reproduce.
- Record repetitions using your usual reference points.
- Change one element at a time to understand what is improving.
A useful measure is one you can repeat
One extra repetition with the same assistance may be more informative than a change of grip. Record what you did and how hard it felt. You can then decide whether the difficulty still suits you.
If a movement causes pain, do not try to work around it by choosing random variations. Persistent discomfort deserves appropriate advice.
