Softer upper arms: what strength training can change
A softer upper arm can reflect subcutaneous fat, muscle size and changes in skin. These do not all respond in the same way to a triceps exercise.

The essentials before you start.
- Fat, muscle and skin can contribute differently to upper-arm appearance.
- A local exercise cannot choose where fat is lost.
- Strength training cannot guarantee tightening excess skin.
Fat, muscle and skin are different tissues
The appearance of an upper arm reflects subcutaneous fat, muscle size and skin. Skin laxity can change with age. A photograph cannot establish how much each factor contributes.
Studies of localised training do not show reliable targeted fat loss. A burning sensation in the triceps does not mean that more fat is being lost directly above it.

What resistance training can improve
If fat loss suits your situation, adjust your food intake and stay active. You cannot choose the order of areas or the local rate.
An elbow extension can be part of arm training. It cannot guarantee that loose skin tightens. Choose a comfortable variation.
Consider changes across the whole body
Include pulling, pushing, legs and balance. Two strength-training days a week are a health guideline for older adults.
More sets or a cream cannot guarantee removal of excess skin. If it bothers you, a dermatologist can explain the options and limits.
A practical way to use this
First define what you want to improve: strength, everyday function or appearance. Loads and repetitions tell you about training; a photo shows something different and depends on how it was taken. Do not expect arm training alone to deliver a promised change in skin firmness.
Context and limits
Our approach: progressively strengthen your whole body, including your arms. The illustrated exercises are examples, not compulsory movements. Choose a comfortable load and range, and get help learning them when needed.
If overall fat loss suits your situation, it may change your arms without letting you choose where or when. When skin is the main issue, further weight loss is not automatically the answer. Strength training cannot guarantee tightening excess skin; a dermatologist can explain the options if it bothers you.
